One more online flashcard - FlashcardDB

After posting the last blog, I received an email from Jeff with flashcarddb.com. I had seen this one, but failed to remember it when writing the previous post. It has a nice layout, easy to use, fast response, and is free. Jeff wrote:

FlashcardDB at http://flashcarddb.com is an online SRS that allows for embedded images and it offers a choice between the Leitner System and the Anki/Mnemosyne SM-2 algorithm. In fact you can switch back and forth whenever you like.

I did see how to switch between the two learning styles, but was unable to figure out how to add images at first. Then Jeff told me you have to use the html image tag. For example, i added a picture of the sun by entering

<img src=”http://stardate.org/images/gallery/sun5.jpg” style=”width:180px;” />

White this is a bit tedious, it does enable him to provide picture flashcards, without having to build a library of images. It is worth a look!

Anki, Jmemorize, Mnemosyne, Pauker…

I have been trying to find a way to combine the files and pictures I have with a “learning system”, like the Leitner system, or another SRS (spaced repitition system), AND have it available online (like Anki or Quizlet). I am a novice programmer, and have been looking at the above open source programs to see if there is a way to port one of them to allow you to create your own cards easier and have a learning system to speed up the memorization process.

Anki is the closest program I have found, but it will not allow images on the online/web version. I have created a sample anki file with a few cards in it. You will need to install Anki if you don’t have it (download here), then download this file , unzip it to the .anki folder in your My Documents folder (if you are using Windows). Then open the the file in Anki. Let me know if something like this would be useful to you.

If you are looking for a memory learning program, here are the links to the free ones I have found to be the best and easiest to use: Anki, Jmemorize, Mnemosyne, Pauker, Quizlet. Anki has the most options and the developer is very active adding features. Jmemorize is a great standalone program with images. Mnemosyne is very good and also includes images. Pauker doesn’t include images, but it does have a version for mobile devices. Quizlet is an online program without images, but very popular.

There is a commercial software at www.flashmybrain.com that has most of the features I would like, but they don’t seem to have a database of images/sounds that you can select either - but I haven’t signed up for the service to know for sure…

Volunteers needed:

I just received an email stating that there are several incorrect entries in the German flashcards. The person who supplied those was a student, not a native speaker, so if someone would be willing to help with that please email me at support@foreignlanguageflashcards.com and we can get those files proofed and updated.

I am hoping to have another language posted soon, and am still looking to add more languages, so if you or someone you know would like to provide the translation or proof another language please contact me.
Thanks so much.

Programmers wanted

I have been considering adding software to allow users to choose the images they want and then select the language (or add a new language) to create their own customized lists of flashcards. I can only do minor programming, but am willing to learn a programming language or work with a programmer to create this. If any of you language learners are also programmers, or know a programmer, who would be willing to give me some direction on how to work on this task please send an email to support@foreignlanguageflashcards.com. Thanks!
